Composition 2019

These days, among products standardized due to mass production, more attention is drawn to harmonious and balanced creative designs created by combining advanced technology with handicraft materials and techniques. Everchanging technology forms the basis of modern design, but in a diversified world, modern consumers tend to prefer products that stand out with originality and individuality infused with craftsmanship. As such, the methods and values pursued in the fields of modern design and art are in line with the Bauhaus, an art and craft school in Germany in the early 20th century, whose educational ideology is ‘harmonious integration of art and design’.

This work reflects my perspective and reinterpretation based on the spirit of the Bauhaus, which is still an inspiration to modern designers after 100 years. I divided the most representative and essential formative features of the Bauhaus into three categories—simplicity, continuity, and overlapping—and attempted various experiments on physical properties, research on fabric structure, and pattern development. In particular, I tried to work in various ways with diverse materials such as OHP films, wires, acrylic tubing, and clips along with thread. These art fabrics are mainly made by working in parallel with on-looms and off-looms and applying tapestry, fabric pattern development, lace weaving, plain leno, fancy leno, double leno, and transcription techniques. To further emphasize the characteristics of the Bauhaus, I made a circular acrylic plate, covered it with black velvet fabric, fixed artworks on it, and hung it on the wall.
